Thanks

Thank you for all your help. It was very helpful to have each session available to preview and
review. You introduced a wide range of activities - some I will use, others probably not, but its
good to know they are available. Thanks for your patience with my limited abilities (the candy
was great too!)

What skills do I need to teach my students to complete the project?

To complete the project I need to get help from John Thurlow to review the skills in publisher
to make a Venn diagram to compare the two candidates. They also need to go into excel to make
three different graphs to show the results of their survey - "Who do you think will be our next
President?" I also need to review the 5 W's when reading nonfiction text, which they need to read
when they read some of the chapters in "The People Pick a President" a Scholastic reference book.
Finally, I would like to introduce how to debate an issue when they debate - "Should the Electoral
College be Eliminated?"

Chapter 10 - Synthesis

Synthesis takes place in every information problem-solving situation. Most visible part of the
process.

Synthesis includes two aspects -organizing information and then presenting it.

It makes sense to use technology for synthesis.

As students enter fourth and fifth grades, they should have occasional opportunities to choose the
format for presentation.

Session 7 What have you used from this class?

I went to the Big6 website and copied a handout for parents for Academic Open House and
explained that we will be using the Big6 for a project in the spring.
I also asked an Essential Question - What would you look for in a US President? as an introduction
to the project I am doing for this class.

Session four

I still don't have an essential question, but I am seriously considering the following:

How does one become the president of the United States?

Monday, September 8, 2008

I have a good start on my project. I'm not sure I will stick with it, but may change to
another topic. With the election coming up, it may be more valuable to focus on a question
to cover the importance of choosing the next president.

Session 2 - Information Literacy

This is the first blog during our second session of information literacy. This is a very important
tool to use in the classroom.
